Last meeting – 26th June– 7.15 for 7.30pm Topic: Jan Benham on Making aromatherapy lotions and creams – www.JanBenham.co.uk

An interesting, interactive, informative evening and what’s more, Jan and members cooked up a couple of recipes and we were all able to take away a pot each of a lotion and a cream to add our own essential oils.

FHT 50th Congress – 7th/8th July

Quite a few members attended this very special event. On Saturday, apart from attending some fantastic talks and workshops, we had a lovely, sociable time at the drinks and (substantial) nibbles party at the end of the day. Most of the Head Office staff and committee were there, we watched a video of the history of the FHT, listened to short addresses from our Chief Executive Officer, John French and President, Jennifer Wayte, plus a special appearance by Stan Cantrill, a sports therapist from the Hereford LSG who was an Olympic torchbearer and happy to pose with us and his torch. See photos on our Facebook page.

User Group Meeting – Tuesday 18th September – 7.30 – Traveller’s Rest Inn, Mapperley

It’s time to plan for next year’s meetings. It was really useful last September, as well as a good social event, for a few members to meet up as a ‘User Group’ to feed back how the group is going, suggest anything that could be changed, added, arranged and propose speakers for the coming year.

Let Jayne or Jacky know if you’d like to participate. If you can’t make it, but have some ideas, please do let us know.

Free drinks for attenders (within reason!!)

FHT Nottingham LSG Facebook page

Exciting news – inspired by Jon’s talk, we have created a Facebook page as demonstrated at the last meeting, http://www.facebook.com/FhtNottinghamLocalSupportGroup

You do have to sign up to Facebook in order to visit our page, but if you don’t want to get into being ‘friends’ with people, you can purely sign up, make sure you put the highest privacy setting and don’t accept any friends. Go the arrow next to ‘home’ on top right of screen, pull down the menu, choose ‘Privacy settings’, ‘Custom’ and ‘Only me’.

The FHT Nottingham LSG page will appear under ‘Pages’ on the left hand side of your ‘home’ page.

You can interact with the page, posting comments, photos, events.

It’s in its infancy but the more we use it, the more interesting it becomes and YOU can be part of it. Do go and visit it and ‘Like’ it so we know you’ve visited us!

FHT are also on Facebook and use this way of highlighting issues and urgent news about Complementary Therapies.

FHT Head Office News

  • Portable CRBs – Volunteers and charities will now be able to benefit from portable CRB checks rather than all having to check each person individually thus saving them time and money. http://www.thirdsector.co.uk/Policy_and_Politics/article/1132915/volunteers-single-portable-criminal-records-check-new-law/
  • Advice on giving massage treatments – There is now some excellent advice on giving massage treatments following the recent case of Daniel Pytlarz. You can read the full article at http://bit.ly/MRfVWV
  • FHT Blog now live – The FHT has recently launched a blog which is updated daily. To view please go to the members area and follow the link from the home page.
  • A timely reminder about training courses – Please remember when signing up for a training course to check that the qualification will be accepted by the FHT for membership and insurance. One way of knowing is if the course is accredited by the FHT it will be accepted. If you are a course provider why not get your courses accredited and get greater exposure to therapists. Find out more at http://bit.ly/MRi3OD
  • Gala Dinner – The FHT has organised an exciting Gala Dinner arranged in London on Friday 5th October which will feature a champagne reception, a three course dinner along with first class entertainment and dancing into the small hours. It will also showcase the recent excellence awards and present the prizes to the winners. The cost of the tickets for FHT members and guests is just £50 per head. Find out more by going to www.fht.org/gala
  • Are you fully insured? – Did you know that if you work from home (e.g. have clients come to your house for a treatment), this may invalidate your home insurance cover? Give your home insurance company a call and if they won’t insure you for this, then FHT can offer a Homeworker insurance quote. Also ensure your stock if you hold any is covered too. Call FHT on 023 8062 4350 to obtain further information or a quote.

June NEWS

We hope you all had a lovely long Bank holiday and Jubilee celebrations and that the weather didn’t dampen your enjoyment or enthusiasm.

Last meeting – May 29th –Emma Cornish and Janice Collins – Applied Kinesiology

A very interesting, interactive and useful talk with fascinating demo with willing (I think!) ‘clients’. It will be useful to be able to refer clients as appropriate to our two local practitioners of this fascinating diagnostic therapy.

Next Meeting

Date: June 26th– 7.15 for 7.30pm Topic: Jan Benham on Making aromatherapy lotions and creamswww.JanBenham.co.uk

Learn how to make lotions and creams from healthy ingredients with user-friendly recipes for anti-ageing treatments, acne, and sensitive skin conditions such as rosacea. Imagine expanding your existing aromatherapy and beauty practice, selling your own range of natural products made from scratch. Imagine a healthy and youthful complexion for yourself, family and friends. Imagine launching a new business selling online, at craft fairs and markets. In this workshop Jan will demonstrate the making of a cream from scratch. Eachparticipant will then get to customize their own cream or lotion with essential oils and natural botanical extracts.

Jan Benham is a natural cosmetic formulator and instructor of Aromatherapy and Holistic Skin Care. She teaches practical courses on making natural and organic products for body, hair, and skin. Beginning as a mobile Aromatherapist and Reflexologist in 1982, Jan began teaching for Shirley Price Aromatherapy in 1985. Her case studies were included in Shirley Price’s Practical Aromatherapy published in 1982. In 1986 she moved to Canada where she established The Institute of Aromatherapy and The Aroma Shoppe.

Through her teaching Jan has assisted thousands in learning the art and science of making 100% botanical natural products. Based in the Netherlands she teaches and consults with clients in the UK, Canada and Asia. Her clients include complimentary therapists and individuals creating their own product lines. Jan is a fellow of the Federation of Holistic Therapists and member of IFPA. Her professional work included Chairing the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists. She now works with the teaching team at Shirley Price Aromatherapy to deliver Shirley Price Aromatherapy training and other Holistic Health Practitioner courses.

Southwell Folk Festival – 1 – 4 JuneChill Out Zone

Another year – another couple of wet days!!

A huge medal to all the therapists for being so ‘British and resilient’. Nine of us provided 62 treatments over the 3 main days of the Festival. Saturday was a brilliant day and steadily busy. Sunday and Monday we battled against rain and wind! Despite a heated couch and hot stones, most people opted for clothed treatments, but taking advance paid bookings did at least guarantee some clients for couch treatments on those days.

On the Friday, Daniel and I marched up and down the queue for Jools Holland – which snaked past the Chill Out Zone – selling our wares and were quite successful in taster sessions and taking advanced bookings.

A big thank you to Paul especially for the use of his van for transporting the huge amount of equipment and staying to set up on Thursday evening. Thanks also to Sarah, Linda and Alan for helping to ‘demolish’ the COZ (a much quicker job than setting-up!). Thanks to Ros, Trish, John and Denise for stalwart support and such a shame Michael couldn’t make it in the end – ‘wheels’ let him down.

It’s a terrific opportunity to fly the flag for complementary therapies and a challenge to work in such conditions. I hope others appreciate, as I do, that it’s a privilege to work at one of the biggest folk festivals in the country and have the opportunity to enjoy the ‘craic’ and some brilliant music acts.

MAY NEWS

Last meeting Jon Critoph – Digital Marketing

A very comprehensive, useful and informative talk which probably had even some internet-savvy heads spinning!! I hope members took away what they needed and some useful weblinks.

It was a great turn-out and we were delighted to welcome many new faces and some students. Jayne is in the process of matching students with a ‘buddy’ therapist.

Holistic Health – 13th May

A huge thank you to Paul for driving 12 of us safely to NEC and back for a great day out at Holistic Health on Sunday. Although FHT weren’t there this year as they’re concentrating on the 50th Anniversary congress in May and we missed their talks and workshops, there was enough to keep us well occupied. We had mini treatments, stocked up on supplies (and treats), met up with some ‘old’ familiar speakers – Alison Gibbs (Lava Shells, Balinese Massage), Eve Taylor Aromatherapy, Nigel Morgan Jo Keenan and were introduced to new products and people. Members Jane Fuller and Jacky helped to (wo)man the Jing stand and ‘get the Tshirt’.

Next Meeting

Emma Cornish and Janice Collins are Classical Kinesiologists. They are both members of the Kinesiology Federation and trained at the Classical Kinesiology Institute in Leicester. Janice has been practising for 5 years, Emma qualified in August 2011.

The talk will focus on how Kinesiology is a unique method of finding the root causes of a person’s ill health and how balancing the body using emotional, energetic, nutritional and structural methods can allow the individual to find the right conditions to bring about healing in its various forms

April News

Last Meeting – March 27th – Introduction to Shiatsu, hands on health – Pete Anderson

A really interesting evening with useful background information and live demonstration of techniques. Pete is an inspirational speaker and his enthusiasm was boundless.

Next Meeting – ***FREE ENTRANCE TO ALL***

April 24th – Jon Critoph (now Outreach Manager for FHT) – Marketing and business ideas for all – from student to practitioner – from paper based to digital

This meeting is being sponsored by the FHT who provide Jon’s services, accommodation etc so it will be FREE for everyone attending.

A very special meeting to which we have invited students to launch our Buddy Scheme supporting newly qualified student therapists.

Whether you are just starting out along your chosen career as a therapist leaving the world of college and being a student behind or if you have been in practice for many years we all have things we can do differently and learn from one another. This evening will draw on Jon’s may years in business both in the technological word and more recently the past 15 years or so in the world of complementary therapies. We all have something we can learn from each other and share our knowledge and this evening will introduce you to a lot of things Jon has personally tried and found to work well. We will look at ideas from paper based marketing right the way through to up to date digital marketing and help you establish what may work the best for you. Come with an open mind and a willingness to share your ideas and experience and leave full of ideas and inspired to make changes in your business.

Jon started out in a career in electronics and computing which he did very well in rising to the heights of both UK and US corporate companies in the barcode industry. However feeling unfulfilled yet materially successful he decided his path lay elsewhere and he retrained as a complementary health practitioner and also naturally fell into the role of inspirational speaking. Jon has worked part time for the FHT for the past 6 years, building the Local Support Group network and engaging practitioners in areas such as marketing and building their business. Jon describes his life purpose as helping people reach their full potential and he has a real passion for it.

Transport to Holistic Health – Sunday 13th May

Group funds are sufficiently healthy to subsidise the cost to enable members to attend this interesting and useful exhibition. The cost will be £12.50, including the hire, VAT, Car park charge and petrol, less the subsidy, and of course the good services of Paul who’s offered to be chauffeur.

We need 9 people and have 7 interested so far. We would need payment up front once the hire is confirmed.

Although FHT aren’t arranging any workshops/talks this time because they’re concentrating on the 50th Anniversary Congress in July, Gerry Pyves has a workshop at 12.30 for £5 – as Jayne will confirm, he’s an entertaining practitioner of No Hands Massage. Book via Beauty UK on 01332 227698.

‘Buddying Scheme’

Thank you very much to those who offered to be a ‘buddy’. We’re still open for offers. It should only entail minimum time for about 6 months. A friendly voice at the end of the telephone, or you may like to meet up to offer support and guidance.

Coincidentally there’s an article on page 8 of International Therapist about Mentoring training.

Coping with Anxiety Group Talk – Tuesday 17th April

John Suggett, Ros Elderkin and Jacky visited the group to talk on the range of complementary therapies, the benefits and how to find a therapist (plugging FHT and group of course). About 10 people attended, most of whom took advantage of taster treatments of hand/arm massage, reflexology, or onsite massage. They were most appreciative and Mr Godfrey, the leader, is keen to have other speakers on nutrition, yoga, Tai Chi etc. Let Jacky know if you’re interested to go along.

A most interesting and interactive talk giving us valuable insight into hypnotherapy in practice, and its uses. It was an engaging topic and created much interest and questions.

Pete is a Shiatsu practitioner, Yoga and Mindful Meditation teacher with over 20 years exploration of various traditions. **Unfortunately our previously booked speaker for June had to cancel, but we have been fortunate to book Jan, a local practitioner, who taught for Shirley Price and has her own School of Holistic Studies.
